Water Sports

Wild swimming, paddling, snorkeling and everything in between.

Applecross peninsula is bordered on three sides by coastline. And what a coastline it is! Craggy cliffs, beautiful coves, turquoise waters, sandy beaches and crystal-clear rivers. Perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and messing about in boats. Below is a small selection of our favourite spots just to whet your whistle:

Sand Beach

A huge open stretch of sandy beach just 5km from Hartfield. There is an enormous sand dune which is great for hill training, should you be needing it! The water here is initially shallow, with rockpools and a sandy bed. You may spot dolphins and sea otters from this beach.  It is great for collecting seaweed, and snorkelling.

Milltown Pier

In the township of Milltown there is a slipway which makes it easy to get in and out of the water. At high tide, this is a great spot for swimming. The water gets deep fairly quickly but it is clear and often sheltered. Also good for snorkelling and paddleboarding.

Applecross River

Crystal clear water, clean and cold! The Applecross River is very shallow, but some sections form a natural pool, ideal for swimming. By the bridge at the bay is perfect for kids as it is shallow, and the views are outstanding.

The Bay

A large swathe of sandy beach at the heart of the peninsula, The Bay has a large area of machair filled with all colours of wild flowers in the late spring. This beach is great for sunbathing, paddleboarding and for families as the waters are so shallow.

Coille Ghillie & Aird Bann (coral beach)

White coral beaches reaching down to turquoise waters, this is one of the most spectacular beaches on the peninsula. It is a 1.5km walk in to the beach along a rocky track (ideal for walking, running or mountain biking) but is well worth the trek. Swimming is a must, as is seal spotting and collecting jewel-coloured sea glass.

Toscaig Pier

Great for snorkeling and diving. Right at the end of the road to the tip of the peninsula. This pier has no slipway and so you will need to climb down the ladder but the snorkeling and diving here is fantastic. The water is deep so this is not for small children.
